Elite and professional poker players are almost always controversial. Their lives have been widely covered by the media and the press, making them instant local celebrities and sometimes even international. But none has ever conquered the world just by playing poker professionally and displaying a lavish lifestyle for all the world to see. Not until Dan Bilzerian happened. The King of Instagram, as he is commonly known, is as bizarre as it can get. The world wasn’t ready for him, but he had no time to wait.
Who is Dan Bilzerian?
Bilzerian was born on 7 December 1980 in Tampa, Florida. His father, Paul Bilzerian, was a known corporate raider on Wall Street who set up trust funds for his children. In 2000, he entered the Navy Seal training program but never graduated. He later enrolled at the University of Florida, where he majored in Business and Criminology.
In 2009, Bilzerian joined the World Series of Poker Main Event where he finished in 180th place. A year later, Bluff Magazine named his as one of the funniest poker players in the world. In 2011, Bilzerian, already famous in the poker world, was asked to join an elite group of players including actor Tobey Maguire, Nick Cassavetes, and Gabe Kaplan, in order to win back against Ponzi scheme operator Bradley Ruderman. For the succeeding years, Bilzerian has reported winnings amounting to $10.8 million in 2013 and $50 million in 2014.
King of Instagram
While playing professional poker helped put him in the spotlight, Bilzerian’s worldwide fame comes from his own post in the mobile app Instagram. However, it started as a combination of both. One day, at the 2013 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, a clip of Bilzerian in an elite poker table while he was stroking his beard, went viral. From then on, the Internet just can’t get enough of Dan Bilzerian.
For better or for worst, depending on how you look at it, his extravagant lifestyle includes yacht parties with a naked group of women, playing with exotic animals in Africa, different jet planes in a single day, private parties with celebrities, shooting ranges in the savannas, and more. It also helps that he works out and has a well-abled fit body. His feed shows a constraint-free life that seems to have no limits without moral, financial, or legal obligations whatsoever.
To cap it all off, his neighbors include A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio and billionaire heir Sam Nazarian. Simply put, to his almost 30 million followers, he is living the dream—a true King in the modern world.
