Traditionally, IPL takes place around April each year. However, it was delayed indefinitely due to the pandemic and the resulting lockdown in India this year. The pandemic cast a shadow of doubt over whether IPL 2020 would really take place. But after much ado and speculations, it is finally here. Although it will be hosted in UAE, IPL still remains the biggest domestic cricket league in the world. It is a quick stretch of high-octane cricket that rakes in cash by the millions for BCCI. But more importantly, it is a hotbed for sports betting with huge sums of money circulating each year. Naturally, every punter wants in on it. Whether you want to make some money or just bet for fun, it always helps to be up to speed. So here is a rundown of the teams most likely to take the IPL 2020 trophy.
The Favourites for IPL 2020
We will first look at the top three teams this year. If nothing else, these teams should make the playoffs. And then we are going to tally them to determine the likeliest probable winner.
The first team, of course, is Mumbai Indians. They are the most successful IPL team of all. They have bagged the achievement of a whopping four titles, including last year. The biggest investment they have made is on Aussie fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile. But their real strength is in their strong domestic team, and their strong grip on the death overs, for both the bowling and batting innings (Hardik Pandya and Bumrah). With a well adjusted airtight team, Mumbai Indians is in tip-top shape and might as well win their fifth IPL trophy.
Chennai Super Kings
Although not a universal fan favourite, Chennai Super Kings are very much in the race. The 2018 IPL winners are packing some serious star power with the likes of MS Dhoni, Ngidi, and, more recently Faf du Plesis. But the surprise cop-out from Suresh Raina has left them with an uncertain top order. If they do close out that void, though, they will really hit their stride. With the experienced leadership from MS Dhoni, they will likely at least make the playoffs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad is not the top choice for all experts, but they are statistically the most impressive candidate. Out of the seven seasons they have played since inception, they made playoffs in five. The biggest factor is their formidable batting lineup with a solid middle order. We have explosive players like Kane Williamson, Bairstow, and Manish Pandey under David Warner’s leadership. Hyderabad has won 2016, and they can do it again. SRH could be a nice pick for this year’s potential winners. Not only do they have a powerful batting roster, but they are also shaping up to be a deadly bowling side with the local talents like Sid Kaul, Basil Thampi, Rashid Khan, Bhubaneshwar Kumar, and Khaleel Ahmed.
An additional note should be made on Rajasthan Royals. Most will not get their hopes up about them getting close to the trophy. But consider this: in the last five years, Royals have been within the top 4 positions on the league table. And now they have Ben Stokes, in-form Oshane Thomas, and new blood like Andrew Tye under the captaincy of Steve Smith. If they do make the playoffs, you can make good money with small investments due to the high odds offered on them this year.
Betting Based on IPL Predictions
Some general tips always apply to cricket betting – no matter if T20, ODI, or test cricket. The first suggestion is to be cold. This seems like an obvious one, but many of us are passionate about the game. It is also likely that we support a team with great enthusiasm. But when you wager for money, you must leave it behind. Adopt a cold, analytical outlook. Do not bet on teams you support or bet against teams you oppose. Blind support means nothing; only mathematical and objective factors should decide your bets.
The second important thing is good money management. Try not to put all your eggs in one basket. If you want to make a huge bet on a team’s victory, assess all the odds, the risk, and the payoff, and consider whether it is worth taking.
Finally, understand that no one can guarantee any outcome with 100% certainty. The high odds of SRH’s triumph does not certify it will happen. Cricket, ultimately, is an extremely dynamic game. Stronger teams fail. Underdogs can win. That, after all, is the beauty of the sport.
