Bernadine Bezuidenhout Retires from International Cricket to Focus on Charity Work

Bernadine Bezuidenhout Retires from International Cricket

Bernadine Bezuidenhout, a talented wicket-keeper hitter, has decided to stop playing for her country. Hence, putting her efforts onto The EPIC Sports Project, a charity she started.

Hardik Pandya’s late arrival to the T20 World Cup campaign further sparks divorce rumors with wife Natasha.

Remarkable Journey Across Two Nations

Born in South Africa Bernadine played her first game for her home country in 2014. Soon after, she then moved to New Zealand and played her first game for the WHITE FERNS in 2018. That was  after a two-year residential stand-down ended in August 2017.

In the fall of that year, she played in the T20 World Cup. New Zealand lost in the league stage and was eliminated.

Unique achievement in Women’s Cricket

Bernadine Bezuidenhout is one of only nine women in cricket history to have played for two countries at the top level.

  • New Zealand (16 ODIs and 22 T20Is)
  • South Africa (4 ODIs and 7 T20Is).

On the whole, she has played in 20 ODIs and 29 T20Is.

In the first six games New Zealand played against England this year, Bezuidenhout was in the starting XI five times. She was injured in the last ODI and couldn’t play.

Bezuidenhout was told she had RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) and couldn’t play for two years.

Nonetheless, Bezuidenhout will still be available for her Major Association Northern Districts team. She, therefore, made it clear that she plans to keep playing local cricket next season.

Transitioning to a New Phase

Bernadine Bezuidenhout has had a successful career in non-profit and social enterprise work outside of cricket.

She started The EPIC Sports Project Charitable Trust following her RED-S diagnosis. The charity’s goal is to use sports to give young people in poor areas hope; a sense of belonging and to remove barriers to participation in sports.

Bezuidenhout had a positive attitude about her work abroad. She will play cricket for Northern Districts in South Africa.
