Western Australia Cricket has named all-rounder Aaron Hardie as the new captain of its Sheffield Shield team for the 2026-27 season. The 27-year-old takes over the leadership role from Sam Whiteman, who led the team for the past three full seasons.

This decision marks the beginning of a new era for the state’s red-ball cricket under the leadership of new Head Coach Beau Casson. Hardie will lead a squad that finished at the bottom of the Sheffield Shield table in the most recent season.
Aaron Hardie Steps into Leadership Role
The appointment of Aaron Hardie comes after a period of major change within the Western Australia coaching staff and playing group. Sam Whiteman, who enjoyed a successful stint as captain leading the team to back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, has decided to step down from the captaincy.
Whiteman filled in for an injured teammate and captained the state to the 2023-24 One Day Cup title. Whiteman remains an active player in the WA squad for the coming summer, but is no longer captain.

Hardie is a well-respected figure in the Western Australian cricket system. He has prepared for this role for many years through the Hussey Group, which is a special program at WA Cricket designed to train future leaders. Consequently, many people in the cricket community expected him to eventually take over the top job.
A Strong All-Round Record in First-Class Cricket
In the 2025-26 Sheffield Shield season, he played in seven games, and did well with both bat and ball. He made 436 runs in those games at an average of 33.53 and took seven wickets. His overall record in first-class cricket also shows him as an accomplished all-rounder who can turn a match on its head.
He produced one of his most famous performances in the 2021-22 Sheffield Shield Final. In that match he scored a massive 174 not out against Victoria. This innings helped Western Australia to its first Shield title in 23 years. Hardie has scored 2,000+ runs and taken 74 wickets in first-class cricket since his debut.

International Success and Recent Form
Aaron Hardie is a regular member of the Australian national team in white-ball cricket. He made his debut for Australia in late 2023 during tours of South Africa and India. Since then, he has represented his country 31 times in One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals.
Most recently, Hardie played exceptionally in the 2026 Pakistan Super League final. Playing for Peshawar Zalmi, he earned the Player of the Match award after a brilliant all-round performance. He took 4 wickets for 27 runs and then scored an unbeaten 56 runs to lead his team to the championship. This success in a high-pressure final has given him even more confidence as he prepares to lead Western Australia.
A New Era Under Beau Casson
The appointment of Hardie coincides with Beau Casson taking over as the Head Coach of the Western Australian men’s team. Casson believes that Hardie has the right personality to lead the group. He described Hardie as a player who earns respect through his hard work and his ability to stay calm under pressure.

Furthermore, Casson expressed gratitude for the work done by Sam Whiteman over the past few years. He noted that Whiteman’s experience will still be very valuable to the team as they try to improve on their last-place finish. Hardie himself stated that he is incredibly honoured to be the captain and is excited to work with the quality people in the squad.
