The Ministry of Youth and Sports in Bangladesh has ordered a high-level investigation into the World Cup failures and controversies. This decision comes after the national team missed the 2026 T20 World Cup and the women’s team suffered a disappointing exit from the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The government formed a three-member committee on May 10, to find out why these sporting disasters happened.
State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, confirmed the investigation aims to fix the country’s diplomatic failure in international cricket. The committee must look into why the board decided to boycott matches and how this affected the nation’s reputation.
Investigation Committee Formed for World Cup Fiasco
The National Sports Council (NSC) created the inquiry panel to provide a detailed report within 15 working days. The government wants to know if the decision to skip major tournaments was avoidable. Many fans and experts were shocked when Bangladesh did not play in the T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year.
The committee will interview board officials, players, and other people involved in the decision-making process. They will examine whether the BCB acted properly when talking to the International Cricket Council (ICC). The government believes that sports should unite the nation and wants to make sure such mistakes never happen again.

How It All Started
The trouble began on January 3, 2026 when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release pacer Mustafizur Rahman. This happened due to bad political relations between India and Bangladesh at that time.
The previous interim government in Bangladesh had said in response that it was unsafe for the national team to travel to India. The BCB agreed to the decision and demanded a change of venue. And now, the current government of Bangladesh wants to know if this was a smart thing to do or a failure of sports diplomacy.

Why Did Bangladesh Skip the T20 World Cup?
The core of the investigation is related to the decision to withdraw from the 2026 T20 World Cup. The BCB refused to send the team to India, citing “security concerns”. However, the ICC stated that there were no real threats and rejected the board’s request to move the matches to Sri Lanka.
The government investigation will look at the roles of former officials. Specifically, the roles of former BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul and former sports advisor Asif Nazrul are under the scanner. Reports suggest that political tension played a major role in the boycott. Scotland eventually replaced Bangladesh in the tournament.

Financial Impact of World Cup Exit
Experts say the BCB lost millions of dollars in potential income. This money is usually used to build stadiums and train young players. Bangladesh lost around $300,000 to $500,000 as participation fees in group stage appearances. They faced losses up to $27,000,000 in ICC revenue shares, which is roughly 60% of the BCB’s annual income.
Losing that much of the annual budget means the board has less money for domestic leagues and women’s cricket development. Furthermore, the possible $2 million fine from the ICC could make the situation even worse. Also, Bangladeshi players lost deals with major sports brands worth millions.
Reforms and Accountability in Bangladesh Cricket
The government is also investigating other serious issues in the BCB. The former skipper, Jahanara Alam, had recently submitted a long-pending investigation into sexual harassment charges. The High Court has compelled the BCB to be more transparent and to follow the national law.
In addition, the National Sports Council dissolved the previous BCB committee over irregularities in the last election. The board is now being run by a new 11-member ad-hoc committee with former skipper Tamim Iqbal at the helm.
