Cricket fans across India are facing massive frustration as tickets for the high-profile Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) match sold out in less than 60 seconds. MI will face the defending champions, RCB, at the Wankhede Stadium on April 12, 2026.
However, within minutes of official portals showing a “SOLD OUT” status, the same tickets appeared on unofficial third-party resale websites for prices as high as INR 1 lakh. This has sparked a major controversy about the transparency of IPL tickets.
The 60-Second Sell-Out Crisis
The official ticket sales for the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) began with extreme speed. On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, official sales for RCB home matches went live at 4:00 PM. Reports from investigations show that the entire inventory vanished in under a minute. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians also opened their sales windows, and those tickets disappeared just as quickly.
Fans who waited in online queues were shocked not to find any tickets whatsoever. They were shown Sold Out or Coming Soon messages almost instantly. However, third-party sites were already listing hundreds of tickets while the official platforms showed no availability. This has left many fans outraged.
Resale Prices Skyrocket on the Black Market
The official ticket prices and those on the resale market are staggering. Prices for general stands officially range from INR 450 to INR 4,000, and premium seating begins around INR 7500. However, the prices exceed INR 1 lakh for the MI vs RCB clash in the secondary market.
According to reports, base seats on resale platforms are starting at INR 15,000, which is nearly four times the original price. On the other hand, premium stands are being listed for INR 50,000, and VIP tickets are listed for INR 1 lakh each. Consequently, the secondary listings have seen prices inflated over 10-15 times their original price.
Why the MI vs RCH Match is in Such High Demand
The massive demand in this match comes from the history and rivalry between the teams. Royal Challengers Bengaluru is home to one of the best batsmen, Virat Kohli. They are facing off against the five times IPL champions in this heated match at Wankhede Stadium.
RCB, having won their first-ever title in 2025, enter this season as defending champions. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians are one of the most successful franchises in the history of IPL. With five titles to their name, they are now led by captain Hardin Pandrya, and head coach Mahela Jayawardene. Understandably, this is one of the biggest games in the IPL 2026 season.
Allegations of VVIP Dumping and Corporate Quotas
Many fans are asking how tickets sell out in 60 seconds when stadiums hold thousands of people. Reports suggest that a large portion of stadium capacity is not actually available to the general public. In modern IPL cycles, between 30,000 and 40,000 seats are often pre-allocated to different groups.
These groups include Sponsor Quotas, BCCI/State Association Invites, and Club Memberships. Therefore, only a tiny percentage of tickets actually reach the online booking portals. This is mathematically impossible within a minute, rather than showing how many fans are trying to buy tickets.
IPL Teams Ticketing Strategies
The Mumbai Indians target diverse customer segments. The team did not release all tickets to the general public at once. Instead, they followed a four-phase process. They offered tickets through Google Pay Exclusive, which is a window for users of the payment app. They have Membership Access that allows early access for Gold, Silver, and Junior members.
Then there’s Blue members which gives access for registered users. And finally the General Public, which is the final window for everyone else. However, even “Gold” members complained that the system crashed under the heavy load. This staggered release meant that by the time the general public could log in, most of the best seats were already gone.
As for RCB, they have moved entirely to digital M-Tickets for the 2026 season. This requires a password and lock to help verify ownership of the ticket holder.

Official Warnings and Legal Risks
Both franchises have issued warnings to fans about buying tickets from unverified secondary sources. Royal Challengers Bengaluru stated that tickets are only authorized if purchased through the official RCB website or app (Ticketgenie). They warned that anyone using third-party tickets could be denied entry to the stadium.
Additionally, the BCCI terms and conditions clearly state that tickets are non-transferable. The board has the right to cancel any ticket that has been resold or auctioned without permission. Despite these rules, enforcing them at the stadium gates is very difficult when thousands of people are entering at once.
