Former Bangladesh captain and long-serving cricket administrator Minhajul Abedin will become a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) without facing a contest. The BCB Election Commission confirmed this after releasing its final list of candidates on Monday, May 25, following the withdrawal phase.
Minhajul will represent Category 1, the regional and district councillor category, from the Chattogram division. With two director seats available for Chattogram and only two candidates left standing, Minhajul and Moin Uddin Chowdhury, both will walk into their positions without a vote being cast.
The development came after Shariful Islam pulled his nomination, clearing the path for both remaining candidates.
How Minhajul Reached This Point in Bangladesh Cricket Administration
Minhajul Abedin’s journey in Bangladesh cricket stretches back decades. He represented the national side as a player and later transitioned into administration after retiring from the game. His most recognised role in the BCB came through the national selection panel, where he served first as a selector and then as chief selector for more than ten years.
He is currently a member of the BCB’s ad-hoc committee, which has been managing the board’s affairs ahead of the upcoming elections. Moving into a director’s role marks a natural progression for someone with his level of institutional experience within the BCB.
What Minhajul Said About His New Role and Chattogram Cricket
Minhajul did not shy away from acknowledging both the honour and the weight of the new position.
“It’s a great privilege to join BCB as a director but along with that my responsibility increased a lot,” he told Cricbuzz. “After retirement I joined the board and worked in different capacities and now will try to share those experiences in the board room.”
He also spoke directly about his intentions for Chattogram’s cricket. “Since I am from Chattogram, I will try to revive Chattogram’s cricket. Regional cricket first started in Chattogram and we will try to revive regional cricket again.”
The comments signal that Minhajul intends to use his position not just for board-level governance but to push for tangible development in one of Bangladesh’s historically significant cricket regions.

Where the BCB Election Now Stands Across All Categories
The full picture of the June 7 election is becoming clearer. Contests will only take place in the Khulna and Barishal divisions under Category 1, and in the Dhaka club category under Category 2.
In Khulna, three candidates, Shafiqul Alam, Shantanu Islam and Mohammad Abdus Salam, are fighting for two seats. In Barishal, Muntasir Alam Chowdhury and Mizanur Rahman are competing for a single position.
Several other divisions already have their directors confirmed without a vote. Syed Bin Osman and S M Abdullah Al Fuad will represent Dhaka, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury will represent Sylhet, Mirza Masud Amin will take Rangpur, and Mir Shakrul Alam Simanto will represent Rajshahi. Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir was also confirmed unopposed from Category 3.
In the Dhaka club category, 16 candidates are now competing for 12 director seats after two withdrew: Lutfur Rahman of Legends of Rupganj and Mahmudur Rahman of Old Dhaka Cricketers.
Among the 16 remaining candidates is former Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, representing Old DOHS Sports Club.
The 25-member BCB board, once fully elected, will be responsible for choosing the next BCB president.
