Shaun Tait Likely to Step Down as Bangladesh Pace Bowling Coach Ahead of Australia Series

Shaun Tait Bangladesh coach

Shaun Tait could leave as the pace bowling coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team. The former Australian pace bowler recently gave an interview for a coaching role with the Bengal cricket team in India.ย

The news makes the Bangladesh team doubtful as they prepare for a big series against Australia starting in June 2026. Consequently, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) may have to find a new coach much earlier than expected.

Shaun Tait and the Bengal Coaching Link

Shaun Tait recently met with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to discuss a move to India. He originally applied for the head coach position for the state team. However, the CAB decided to keep their current head coach, Laxmi Ratan Shukla. Despite this, the Indian side still wants Tait to join them as a specialist pace bowling coach.

Several famous cricket figures participated in Taitโ€™s interview process. These included former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and former cricketers Arun Lal and Devang Gandhi. If Tait accepts the role, he will work with senior players and help develop young fast bowlers in Bengal.

Tait has strong personal reasons for wanting to work in India. His wife is Indian, and he spends a lot of time in the country. Therefore, a job in Bengal would allow him to be closer to home while opening doors for future roles in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Salary and Contract Details

Shaun Tait earns a decent salary with the Bangladesh team. He makes around $14,000 a month. That totals to almost two crore Indian rupees a year. The big salary is one of the biggest challenges for the Bengal team as they have to decide whether they can match his current salary.

Tait joined Bangladesh in May 2025. His original contract with the BCB runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, the recent interest from India suggests he may not finish his term with the Tigers. Meanwhile, the BCB had previously hoped his aggressive bowling philosophy would bring long-term energy to the squad.

Impact on the Bangladesh Pace Attack

The news of Taitโ€™s possible exit comes at a time when the pace department of Bangladesh is making significant progress. Under Taitโ€™s guidance, several players have reached new heights in international cricket. Young pacer Nahid Rana recently praised Tait for giving him the confidence to bowl at express pace.

Nahid Rana took a historic five-wicket haul against Pakistan in March 2026. He said Tait was more like a friend than a strict coach. Tait gives his bowlers clear plans to execute on the field, and a lot of it is sticking to what they do best. Taitโ€™s experience as a World Cup winner has also benefited other senior bowlers like Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam.

The Upcoming Australia Series Challenge

Bangladesh has a very busy and difficult schedule in the next few months. Australia will tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series first in June 2026. Bangladeshโ€™s next competition will be a historic Test series in Australia in August 2026.

The matches in Australia will take place at the following venues:

Marrara Stadium, Darwin First Test (13โ€“17 August 2026)
Great Barrier Reef Arena Mackay: Second Test (22โ€“26 August 2026)

These overseas conditions will be the real test for the Bangladesh pacers. Experts believe that while the team performs well at home, they must learn to adjust their lengths for the extra bounce in Australia and South Africa. Losing Tait right before these tough tours could disrupt the team’s preparation.
