Stephen Fleming to Join England T20I Squad Ahead of Test Coaching Stint

Stephen Fleming

New England Test head coach Stephen Fleming arrived in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2026, to begin a two-week preparation period with the national team set-up. The former New Zealand captain will join England’s T20 International squad in Manchester over the weekend to shadow limited-overs head coach Brendon McCullum during the third match against Sri Lanka.

Fleming aims to integrate himself into the national team environment before officially taking charge of the Test side for the upcoming tour of South Africa in December 2026. The England and Wales Cricket Board appointed Fleming in July 2026 as the successor to McCullum, who transitioned into the white-ball coaching role.

Shadowing McCullum in Manchester

Stephen Fleming will link up with the white-ball squad ahead of the final T20I against Sri Lanka in Manchester. England start their three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka on 15 September 2026, with batter Harry Brook captaining the limited-overs side. Brook also serves as the vice-captain of the Test team.

During the Manchester fixture, Fleming will work alongside McCullum to observe team operations and player preparation. The joint appearance marks the first formal collaboration between the two New Zealanders under England’s new management structure. Beyond their national roles, Fleming and McCullum also operate as business partners.

McCullum confirmed that the coaching staff will welcome Fleming’s input during the Manchester match. “He’ll do that pretty quickly and get up to us in Manchester,” said McCullum. “We’ll get a good opportunity to work on some things.”

County Visits and Key Meetings

Before joining the squad in Manchester, Fleming launched a nationwide tour across English cricket venues on Monday morning. He travelled along the M1 motorway to visit county grounds and the ECB National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough. Through these visits, Fleming plans to meet players, coaches, and support staff across the domestic network.

“He was on the M1 this morning,” McCullum said on Monday. “He was driving around the country making sure he catches up with a few people around the county scene and down at Loughborough as well and getting around trying to get his feet under the desk.”

Fleming will also hold key strategic meetings during his two-week stay in England. He will meet ECB managing director of men’s cricket Rob Key and Test captain Joe Root. Fleming missed England’s recent 3-0 Test series win against Pakistan, where assistant coach Marcus Trescothick acted as interim head coach. During his meetings with Root, Fleming will review the Pakistan series performance and begin formal tactical preparations for the Test squad’s winter schedule.

Preparations for South Africa and Australia

Fleming is mainly focused on England’s upcoming tour of South Africa. The squad will start its tour with a warm-up match in Durban on 9 December 2026. England will then play a three-Test series against South Africa across December 2026 and January 2027.

The upcoming calendar places heavy physical demands on multi-format players. Six players from the XI that played in the third Test victory over Pakistan at Edgbaston, including captain Brook, travelled to Southampton less than 24 hours after the match finished to join the limited-overs squad. Looking further ahead, England’s management must also plan for the 150th Anniversary Test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 2027.
