Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 season came to an end following Rajasthan Royals defeat on May 29. Despite the setback, the 15-year-old batter leads the IPL 2026 Orange Cap race with 776 runs in the tournament. He scored 96 runs from 47 balls against Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 2 match played in New Chandigarh.
Although Rajasthan Royals lost the game by 7 wickets, Sooryavanshi remains the leading run-scorer. GT’s captain Shubman Gill and his opening partner Sai Sudharsan are closely behind Sooryavanshi in the Orange Cap leaderboard. They have a chance to take the top spot moving into the final match.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Record-Breaking Season
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has broken several long-standing records in the Indian Premier League. He finished his 16 matches with a massive total of 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30.

During this period, he scored one century and five half-centuries while opening the batting for Rajasthan. Therefore, he is currently the youngest player ever to lead the Orange Cap leaderboard at the end of the playoffs.
Breaking Chris Gayle’s Sixes Record
The most impressive part of Sooryavanshi’s season was his ability to hit sixes with ease. He smashed a total of 72 sixes in 16 games.

This performance broke the previous record held by West Indian legend Chris Gayle, who hit 59 sixes in the 2012 season. Interestingly, Sooryavanshi was only one year old when Gayle set that record 14 years ago.
Fastest to 1000 IPL Runs
In addition to his six-hitting feats, Sooryavanshi became the fastest player in IPL history to reach 1,000 career runs in terms of balls faced. He achieved this milestone in just 440 balls, breaking the previous record of 545 balls set by Andre Russell.

He also achieved this feat in just 23 innings, the fastest Indian to do so and the joint-second fastest overall after Shaun Marsh.
The Race for the Orange Cap Heading into the Final
Even though Sooryavanshi holds the top position right now, Rajasthan Royals are out of the competition. Consequently, his total of 776 runs is now locked. Meanwhile, two batters from the Gujarat Titans have a chance to overtake him during the final in Ahmedabad.
Shubman Gill is currently in second place with 722 runs from 15 matches. Therefore, he needs to score 55 runs in the final to take the Orange Cap from Sooryavanshi. Gill enters the final in excellent form after scoring an unbeaten 104 off 53 balls in Qualifier 2.
Sai Sudharsan occupies the third position on the leaderboard with 710 runs. He has been very consistent this season and has scored eight half-centuries. To win the Orange Cap, Sudharsan must score 67 runs in the final match.

Many cricket experts have been amazed by Sooryavanshi’s performances this year. Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara stated that the 15-year-old is more than ready to play for the Indian national team. Sangakkara praised the teenager for his maturity and his ability to read the game under pressure. Furthermore, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill called him the world’s best batter right now after witnessing his 96-run knock in Qualifier 2.
Despite the personal success, Sooryavanshi was seen crying in the dugout after his team lost the Qualifier 2 match. He hid his face in his Orange Cap to mask his disappointment. Nevertheless, his performance has earned him a call-up to the India A squad for an upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka starting on June 9.
