KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) Chief Executive Officer Heinrich Strydom announced a thorough internal review on Tuesday after disappointing spectator turnout at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.
Fewer than 20,000 cricket fans attended the five-day opening Test match between South Africa and Australia. The venue holds 20,000 spectators per day, meaning the overall crowd filled less than one-fifth of the total available capacity. Average daily attendance reached fewer than 4,000 people throughout the match.
A total of just under 20,000 fans attended the game, which was South Africa’s first home Test since January 2025 https://t.co/hZpgXJZuzf

Official Statement and Low Attendance Figures
Heinrich Strydom expressed disappointment regarding the low turnout for a high-profile fixture. He stated that a Test match of this quality deserved much greater support in the stadium stands. He acknowledged that supporters currently face competing financial and personal demands. However, Strydom stressed that the Union must understand what influences fan decisions.
The Chief Executive promised that KZNCU will consult local communities and cricket followers directly. He emphasised that Test cricket forms a central part of South Africa’s sporting heritage. Strydom called on the broader cricket community to help make live matches more accessible, appealing, and engaging for families and fans of all ages.
Economic Factors and Urban Disruption
Several external factors influenced low turnout during the five days of play. Ongoing civil unrest affected the surrounding city area throughout the match. Demonstrators staged protests in the Durban Central Business District, The protest is located just one kilometre from Kingsmead Stadium.
Economic pressures remain one of the most influential factors. South African Test captain Temba Bavuma highlighted these living costs during his post-match press conference in isiXhosa. Furthermore, local school and university examination schedules kept younger supporters at home during match days.
Competing sporting events in Durban also drew large crowds away from Kingsmead. Over 50,000 football fans packed a local venue across town to watch the cup final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns while the Test match was under way.
Stadium History and Calendar Pressures
Kingsmead Stadium has struggled with poor attendance figures for several years. Due to consistently low crowds in Durban, Cricket South Africa previously moved the traditional Boxing Day Test match to SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Attendance issues also affected white-ball cricket earlier in the tour. The season-opening One Day International between South Africa and Australia on 24 September drew just over 12,000 spectators, despite taking place on a national public holiday.
Global calendar pressures forced administrators to schedule international Test matches in October for the first time. Tournament commitments for the SA20 league occupy January and February, while the Indian Premier League fills the autumn months.
