The timing could not have been worse for Neymar. The game was played just one day before Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti was due to name his squad for the 2026 World Cup — a tournament Neymar has been targeting as a comeback after years of injury setbacks.
What Happened During the Santos vs Coritiba Match
The incident occurred in the second half when Neymar went off the pitch temporarily to receive treatment on a calf injury. While he was on the sideline being attended to, the fourth official held up the number 10 board, signaling his substitution. Robinho Jr. came on in his place.
Neymar had not been informed of the change and walked back onto the pitch after treatment, unaware he had been substituted. Once he realized what had happened, he immediately confronted referee Paulo Cesar Zanovelli, insisting that left-back Gonzalo Escobar, wearing the number 31 shirt, was the player who should have left the field — not him.

Santos later released a statement on social media addressing the situation directly. “The fourth official got the substitution wrong,” the club said. “This was confirmed by the television coverage and by the note used by the officials during the substitution.
