On Saturday, August 22, 2026, the five-time Indian Premier League champions Mumbai Indians appointed Zubin Bharucha as their new Director of Performance.
The 56-year-old former first-class cricketer ended his stint with Rajasthan Royals and joined the Mumbai Indians, reporting directly to head coach Mahela Jayawardene.

The franchise is hoping Bharucha can recreate the magic that defined his long career at Rajasthan Royals. Therefore, the Mumbai Indians are looking to modernize the way they find and groom young cricketers. The new Director of Performance will now focus on player development programs during the off-season.
Who is Zubin Bharucha?
Before his cricket administration and high performance coaching roles, Zubin Bharucha played first class cricket. He played for Mumbai in India and Surrey in England. This dual playing experience gave him a deep insight into different conditions of play and team cultures. That means he knows the mental and physical toll of playing high-level cricket.
Since the IPL began in 2008, Bharucha has been with Rajasthan Royals in different roles. This resulted in almost two decades with the franchise. He was the Team Director and took care of the teamโs cricketing affairs from 2008 to 2015, till the franchise was suspended by the IPL for two years. After a brief stint as coach for Delhi Daredevils, he was the franchiseโs Director of Cricket Operations from 2018 to 2025.
Mumbai Indians Face Hard Times After Six Years of Failure
Bharucha faces an immediate challenge at Mumbai Indians. The most successful franchise in IPL history is fighting to stay competitive in recent years. Mumbai Indians are 5 times winner of IPL. But the team has not won a trophy since the 2020 season. The franchise has not won a championship in six years. They have also qualified for the IPL playoffs only twice since 2020.
The teamโs problems peaked during the recent IPL 2026 season. The franchise eventually finished ninth on the points table. They lost ten of their fourteen league games throughout the 2026 tournament. Mumbai Indians players were not in the race for the Orange Cap or Purple Cap.

Ryan Rickelton was the teamโs leading batsman but finished 17th on the list of the leagueโs leading run-getters. Leg-spinner Allah Ghazanfar was the best bowler of the team, listed 14th on the wicket-takers list. The performance continued a barren streak that already included two last-place finishes. Consequently, MI management is about to make some major decisions before IPL 2027.
