CSK shared the official announcement through their social media accounts on Thursday. Consequently, official medical reports confirmed that he needs at least 10-12 weeks to recover. This news is a major blow for CSK because they have relied on the left-arm pacer for early breakthroughs this season.
What Happened to Khaleel Ahmedโs Right Leg
Khaleel Ahmedโs medical assessments reveal the severity of damage to his right leg. He suffered a Grade 2 quadriceps tear and a stretch injury to the right rectus femoris tendon. Additionally, doctors have confirmed finding a complete tear of the direct head of the muscle.
Because of this serious condition, the pacer requires long-term rehabilitation. Meanwhile, it likely takes about three months for the bowler to be match-ready. This injury effectively ends his participation in the IPL 2026 tournament.
How the Injury Occurred During the CSK vs KKR Match
The 28-year-old fast bowler got injured during the 17th over of the second innings against KKR. Ahmed was about to bowl the final ball of his 4th over. However, he felt a sudden discomfort in his right thigh. He tried to complete his spell, but he had to be called out to prevent further damage.
Consequently, he abruptly pulled out of his run-up and clutched his right leg in visible pain. Medical staff quickly attended to him on the field before he hobbled off to the dugout. Medium pacer Gurjapneet Singh stepped in to finish the over and conceded a boundary on the final ball.
Khaleel Ahmed Stats and Potential Replacements
Khaleel Ahmed played in all five matches for CSK before his injury. In his final game against KKR, he bowled out Sunil Narine. He gave 24 runs from his 3.5 overs. He maintained an economy rate of 8.67 runs per over during his five games. Overall, he took 2 wickets this season.
Mukesh Choudhary will likely replace the injured pacer. Gurjapneet Singh and Anshul Kamboj are also probably options as replacements for CSK. Furthermore, CSK signed Spencer Johnson as a replacement for Nathan Ellis, and he is expected to join the squad next week. Johnson is also a left-arm pacer and could help fill the gap left by Khaleel.
Growing Injury Crisis for Chennai Super Kings
The list of CSK injuries in IPL 2026 has grown by one. Earlier in the season, Australian pacer Nathan Ellis was ruled out due to an injury. Also, MS Dhoni has missed the entire tournament due to a calf injury.
Young batter Dewald Brevis also missed early matches with a side strain but has recently returned to the squad. These injuries have forced captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the coaching staff to change their team combinations constantly.
