The Lanka Premier League is changing how teams build and field their squads in 2026. Two new rules were confirmed ahead of the LPL draft, which took place on Monday in Colombo. First, impact substitutes will be allowed during matches. Second, every team must include at least one Under-23 player in their playing XI throughout the game — even after an impact sub is used.
These are significant changes for a tournament that has been building its identity in Asian T20 cricket. The rules directly shaped how franchises approached squad selection at the draft.
What the Impact Sub Rule Means for LPL 2026
Impact substitutes allow teams to bring in a replacement player at a strategic point in the match, typically before or after a key phase of play. The IPL introduced the rule a few years ago, and it has been a talking point in the cricket world since. Sachin Tendulkar has publicly stated his opposition to the concept, but that has not stopped other leagues from picking it up.
The impact sub is an added tactical flexibility for LPL teams. A side may enter a match with a certain batting/bowling strategy, but change it as per the conditions of the match. However, the rule also makes squad building more complex. Teams cannot simply fill their 18-player rosters without thinking about which player serves as a meaningful impact option.
Under-23 Requirement Adds Pressure on Squad Composition
The rule that an Under-23 player — defined as anyone born on or after July 1, 2003 — must feature in the XI at all times is a deliberate push toward developing younger Sri Lankan talent. The rule does not disappear when an impact sub is made, which means teams had to plan carefully around this from the very start of the draft.
This was not straightforward. Several of Sri Lanka’s Under-19 prospects are unavailable for LPL 2026 because they are scheduled to face India in July. The shortage of eligible young players made the Emerging Under-23 draft category, priced at $10,000, a more competitive space than it might otherwise have been.
Teams also had to consider whether their Under-23 pick was capable of holding a spot in a competitive T20 XI or whether they were simply ticking a box. The stronger franchises drafted youngsters who could genuinely contribute, balancing development with results.
LPL Draft 2026: Teams, Pre-Signings and Squad Breakdown
The draft ran for just under four hours. Each franchise was required to build a squad of at least 18 players across 14 mandatory rounds, with two optional additional rounds available. Players were split into Platinum ($50,000), Gold ($30,000), Classic ($20,000), Associate ($15,000), and Emerging Under-23 ($10,000) categories, with separate brackets for local and overseas players.
Four of the five franchises came in with new identities. Jaffna are now SC Jaffna Kings, Galle are the Galle Gallants, Kandy play as Kandy Royals, and Colombo are the Colombo Kaps. Only the Dambulla Sixers kept their name.
Notable pre-signings included Shakib Al Hasan, Wanindu Hasaranga, Moeen Ali, Kamindu Mendis, and Dushmantha Chameera. Avishka Fernando and Charith Asalanka went in the first round despite both being outside Sri Lanka’s current T20 setup.
Pathum Nissanka and Matheesha Pathirana are both managing injuries, and their participation in the tournament remains uncertain.
